ATHENS, Ohio -- A grand opening celebration for the new U.S. Postal Service office on Ohio University's Athens campus will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday (March 3) in Baker Center.

Officials from the university and the Postal Service district office in Columbus will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Refreshments and door prizes also will be available Monday morning for visitors to the new full-service postal station located in the lobby of Baker Center.

The postal station, which will be open to the public but geared toward university students, faculty and staff, will provide the same services as the main U.S. Post Office on Stimson Avenue and will be operated by the U.S. Postal Service.

The service area will be staffed by full-time U.S. postal clerks, according to Athens Postmaster Carol Harvey. Hours of operation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The postal station will be closed for lunch from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. weekdays and when Baker Center is closed.

The university recently renovated the area, and U.S. Postal Service officials from Columbus were on campus last week installing equipment.

Ohio University Mail Services Manager Kim Wortman said he and former Athens Postmaster Steve Eldridge and Delores McCuistion, acting supervisor of customer service, began planning the new on-campus postal facility more than a year ago with the idea that we needed to improve customer service for the students."
