ATHENS, Ohio -- James Louis Heap, chair of the Department of Theory & Policy Studies in Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, has been appointed dean of the Ohio University College of Education, effective July 1.

"I am delighted that James Heap will be joining us," said Provost Sharon Brehm. "His strong commitment to building consensus, seeking partnerships and working cooperatively is very much in keeping with the values of Ohio University. I look forward to welcoming him to campus."

Heap, 52, has a special interest in integrating graduate education, research and teacher education.

"I hope to contribute to efforts to raise the national profile of the university by working with faculty, students and staff who are committed to making a difference to education and human development through excellent scholarship, instruction and service," Heap said. "The College of Education has long served Southeastern Ohio's educators, parents and communities. I intend to continue that tradition by seeking synergy between research, instruction and community service."

Heap completed a bachelor of arts degree in social sciences at the University of California-Santa Barbara, and master of arts and doctoral degrees in sociology at the University of British Columbia.
