ATHENS, Ohio -- John Allen Paulos, professor of mathematics at Temple University in Philadelphia and best-selling author, will lecture on "Mathematics, Democracy and Newspapers" as part of the Kennedy Visitors Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. April 29 in 237 Morton Hall.

Paulos' speech will be a reprise of his best-selling book, "A Mathematician Reads the Newspapers." The lecture will investigate the mathematical angle of stories in the news and offer a different perspective to news stories that, on the surface, may not seem to involve math at all.

A specialist in mathematical logic, probability and the philosophy of science, Paulos has been the subject of interviews by National Public Radio, The Washington Post , The Nation , Business Week and Christian Science Monitor . He has published numerous articles, op-eds and book reviews in The New York Times , The Washington Post and Newsweek , and has appeared on "Late Night with the David Letterman."

Paulos' other works include "Innumeracy -- Mathematical Illiteracy and Its Consequences," which was on The New York Times bestseller list for five months in 1989.

His appearance is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics as part of Mathematics Awareness Week, with funding support from the Kennedy Lecture Series and the College of Arts and Sciences.
