ATHENS, Ohio -- Columbus Mayor Gregory Lashutka will present a lecture on "The Competitive City: Regional Growth in a Global Economy" at 8 p.m. April 16 in Seigfred Auditorium as part of the Herman G. James Lecture Series on Municipal Government.
Lashutka became mayor in 1992 and was re-elected in 1995. He has been recognized for his efforts to improve public safety, generate new jobs and deliver better city services to neighborhoods. In 1994, Columbus hosted the United Nations World Summit on Trade Efficiency, where international officials discussed ways to increase trade through electronic commerce.
Lashutka earned the 1993 Municipal Leader of the Year Award from American City & County magazine. He was president of the National League of Cities in 1996, representing more than 3,000 municipalities in the nation.
The James Lecture Series was established at Ohio University to further the study of municipal government. Herman G. James was president of Ohio University from 1935 to 1943. James specialized in law and political science, and received his doctorate from Columbia University.
