ATHENS, Ohio -- Michael J. Stoltz has been awarded the first USX-Manasseh Cutler Scholars Award, a four-year, undergraduate scholarship paying tuition, room and board at Ohio University.
The Manasseh Cutler Scholars Program, modeled on Oxford University's Rhodes Scholars program for graduate students, emphasizes development of leadership potential. The award includes a stipend to cover structured summer internships and study abroad.
Stoltz, the son of Dennis and Teresa Stoltz of Hueytown, Ala., is a senior at Pleasant Grove High School and one of 14 Cutler Scholars who will attend classes on the Athens campus this fall. Prior to relocating to Alabama, he was involved in numerous school and community activities in Raton, Ariz. He was valedictorian of his class and president of his school's National Honor Society chapter, a four-year participant in the mock trial program, editor of the high school's literary journal and a varsity letterman in track and tennis. He has also appeared in the list of "Who's Who Among American High School Students" several times.
"To be considered a Cutler Scholar, one should be a serious student of physical vigor who exhibits a moral strength of character that is translated into scholastic pursuits and ultimately into community involvement," says Charles J. Ping, Ohio University president emeritus and executive director of the Manasseh Cutler Scholars Program.
The USX-Manasseh Cutler Scholars Award is given to a son or daughter of an employee of USX Corp., of Pittsburgh, and its groups, including the Marathon Group, U.S. Steel Group and Delhi Group.
"The USX-Cutler Scholars program, with its special attention to leadership training, will present exciting opportunities to promising future leaders," said USX Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tom Usher.
