ATHENS, Ohio -- Twenty-two Ohio University students arrested in connection with an early-morning disturbance on Court Street on April 5 will be notified in writing of university disciplinary charges within the next several days, according to Richard Carpinelli, director of the Office of Student Judiciaries.
Those arrested face a variety of criminal charges that include public intoxication, persistent disorderly conduct and inciting a riot.
"Students arrested will be charged through the university's judicial system with civil disturbance,' which, if proven, may result in their suspension or expulsion from the university," Carpinelli said.
"The university is very concerned about the misconduct of the students involved in the disturbance, and we are making every effort to hear these cases as quickly as possible," Carpinelli said.
Both the Athens police and the university are continuing their review of police videotape of the disturbance and plan to pursue both criminal and university disciplinary action against any additional individuals identified as having engaged in criminal activity during the incident.
Carpinelli said a review of student records revealed that of the 34 people arrested during the disturbance, 22 are Ohio University students, rather than the 28 to 30 initially reported to be university students.
