ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University President Robert Glidden will hold public meetings Wednesday and Thursday (April 15 and 16) to discuss Issue 2, a primary and secondary school funding issue that would raise the state's sales tax by one penny.

The meetings will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. to noon Thursday in the Friends of the Library Room on the third floor of the Alden Library.

Proponents of Issue 2 campaign say the additional penny in the state sales tax would generate nearly $1.1 billion in the first year, half of which would be earmarked for education and half for property tax relief. The revenue would help the state provide balanced funding for public schools as ordered by the Ohio Supreme Court.

Voters will decide Issue 2 in the May 5 election. The issue is important to higher education institutions in the state because they may lose up to $300 million in funding annually if the measure fails.
