ATHENS, Ohio -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson will deliver the keynote speech for the 30th annual Communication Week at 8 p.m. (Monday) April 27 at Grover Center. Jackson will speak on the theme of Communication Week, "Communication and Democracy."
A candidate for president in 1984 and 1988, Jackson is president of the National Rainbow Coalition, a national social justice organization devoted to empowerment, education and mobilization, and is probably best known for his civil rights work in the 1960s and '70s. More recently, Jackson has been at the forefront of education reform and has served as a spiritual adviser to President Clinton, accompanying the president on his recent trip to Africa.
"One of our goals was to attract a keynote speaker who would reflect the diversity which exists at both the College of Communication and within the student population at Ohio University," said College of Communication Dean Kathy Krendl. "Jackson's experience in politics and devotion to social justice have given him a unique perspective of democracy around the globe."
Communication Week runs April 27 to May 1 and devotes one day of panel discussions, banquets and workshops to each of the five schools within the college: the School of Visual Communication, J. Warren McClure School of Communication Systems Management, the School of Telecommunications and the Telecommunications Center, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the School of Interpersonal Communication.
Jackson's speech and most of the daily sessions are free and open to the public. Tickets are required for Jackson's speech and are available to the general public at the ticket office in Haning Hall beginning April 20.
