ATHENS, Ohio -- The Friends of the Kennedy Museum will host a free, public opening reception for the photography exhibition "Paul Caponigro: Meditations in Light" from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday (May 2) at Ohio University's Kennedy Museum of American Art.

The exhibit, which includes 45 of Caponigro's silver gelatin prints of photographs taken between 1958 and 1996, will be on display from May 2 to June 20 at the museum on the Athens campus.

Caponigro is regarded as one of the foremost landscape photographers of the 20th century. His work reflects images from various countries, including Ireland, England, France, Italy and the United States. Writer Colin Osman observed in a 1984 Creative Camera article that Caponigro's images "are warm and inviting, and it is only when you have been embraced by them that you can begin to realize that there are layers and layers of feeling and meaning to be experienced."

The Friends of the Kennedy Museum will co-host a gallery talk on the exhibition led by Rosemarie Basile and Ginger Sheridan at 5:30 p.m. June 5 at the museum. Basile, a comparative arts Ph.D. candidate at Ohio University, teaches in the schools of Art and Comparative Arts. Sheridan, who holds an M.F.A. in photography, is the slide curator at the university's Fine Arts Slide Library.

The museum also is showcasing "Hands on to Weaving," a hands-on exhibit focusing on Native American fiber arts designed by graduate art education intern Trisha Clifford-Sprouse as part of her thesis on hands-on education. The gallery exhibit augments "A Century of Weaving: The Navajo Chief Blanket," an ongoing exhibit from the museum's permanent collection.

On May 15, the museum's student volunteers will operate a free special event, "Rides to the Ridges," from noon to 3 p.m. During the event, volunteers will staff an information table at Baker Center, and a van will be available to shuttle people between Baker Center and the museum.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The museum will have special hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (May 3) for Moms' Weekend. In addition, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on two Saturdays next month: May 10 and May 24. The museum is located at The Ridges, and admission is free.
