OHIO UNIVERSITY'S 29TH COMMUNICATION WEEK

ATHENS, Ohio -- Three days of workshops and panel discussions sponsored by the College of Communication's five schools and the Second International Conference on Entertainment-Education and Social Change will highlight Ohio University's 29th annual Communication Week on the Athens campus May 2-10.

The schools of Interpersonal Communication, Telecommunications, Communication Systems Management, Visual Communication and Journalism will each present a half-day of events beginning the afternoon of Friday, May 2 and continuing May 5-6.

The International Entertainment-Education Conference will take the spotlight beginning May 7 and will feature Hollywood producers, advertising executives and entertainment-education professionals and researchers tackling ways to use communication to promote social change and development. Conference participants will examine ways to add examples of positive social behavior to top-rated television programs and films and ways communication programming has proven successful in preventing AIDS, drug use and unwanted pregnancies in developing countries.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Center for Communication Programs at Johns Hopkins University and Ohio University's Communication and Development Studies Program. The first conference was held at the University of Southern California in 1989.

As is tradition, schools in the College of Communication will sponsor a series of events featuring communication professionals and Ohio University alumni and faculty members. Highlights of the half-day sessions include:

The School of Interpersonal Communication will kick off activities on Friday afternoon, May 2, with events designed to prepare students for the job market and graduate school. John Cassese, a 1979 INCO graduate and vice president-client services for Aniforms Corp., will receive the 1997 INCO Outstanding Alumni Award and deliver a keynote address at 1 p.m. in Baker Center Ballroom. He will speak on Communication Careers in Corporate America." Based in New York City, Aniforms Corp. develops multi-media conferences for major corporations. Cassese is on campus to teach a two-hour College of Communication class the week of April 28.

A panel of graduates of the School of Telecommunications will discuss work experiences and job search strategies from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, May 5 in Studio A of the Radio-Television Communication Building.

On the afternoon of May 5, the McClure School of Communication Systems Management will sponsor a panel discussion titled "The Telecommunications Act After One Year: What Difference Has it Made? What Needs to be Done?" from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. in Baker Center Ballroom. Panelists will include Ronda Hartman Fergus, commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio; Marsha Rockey Schermer, vice president-regulatory of Time Warner Communications; and Ken Pfister, assistant vice president of AT&T.

Grover Sanschagrin, interactive product designer for The Chicago Tribune, will speak on "Web Site Design and Content Delivery" from 9 to 10 a.m. in 306 Seigfred Hall, kicking off a morning of Visual Communication events on Tuesday, May 6. Kurt Mutchler, illustrations editor of National Geographic Society, and Detroit News Staff Photographer Donna Terek will follow with separate presentations.

Ralph Barney, co-editor of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, and Cincinnati Enquirer Vice President/Editor Larry Beaupre will be among those participating in a discuss of The Tabloidization of the Mass Media" from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 6 in a session sponsored by the Scripps School of Journalism. The panel will meet in Anderson Auditorium on the first floor of Scripps Hall. Other panelists include Ohio University Professor of Journalism Michael Bugeja, the campus' special adviser to the president on standards, and University of Cincinnati Professor of Electronic Media/Communication Morleen Getz Rouse. Bob Stewart, associate professor and webmaster in the School of Journalism, will discuss the World Wide Web and its Implications for the Future of Journalism" from noon to 1 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium.
