POWER FAILURE ON COLLEGE GREEN

4/6/97

ATHENS, Ohio--Failure of a power line leased from American Electric Power that serves Ohio University's central campus buildings caused a power outage at about 2:30 p.m. today that is expected to last until approximately midnight tonight.

Besides main campus classroom and administration buildings, the outage includes Alden Library, Baker Center and three residence halls: Voigt, Bryan and Scott.

All buildings without power, with the exception of the residence halls, will be closed during the power outage.

A motor overheated when the emergency generators started at the Alden Library basement and set off a smoke detector. The Athens Fire Department responded to the alarm. The library was closed and is expected to reopen 8 a.m. Monday.
