ATHENS, Ohio -- James A. Duke, a medical botanist and author of a popular guide on herbal healing, will present "The Best of the Green Pharmacy" at 8 p.m. April 22 in Ohio University's Morton Hall Room 201.
Duke is the author of "The Green Pharmacy," a guide on herbal healing based on his studies of the medicinal compounds found in common and exotic plants and interviews with traditional folk healers and scientists.
"Dr. Duke is one of the most active and knowledgeable proponents of herbal medicine in the world today," said James Cavender, Ohio University professor of environmental and plant biology. "Athens has always been a center of interest and activity in medicinal botany. Having Dr. Duke here will greatly stimulate our efforts to bring this most worthwhile subject to popular attention."
Duke's interest is in preventive medicine using herbal treatments that have been used for millennia in less developed countries of the world where the standard of living will not support more expensive Western medicine. During his 30-year career at the United States Department of Agriculture, Duke played a leading role in the study of medicinal plants. Now retired, Duke raises hundreds of specimens of healing plants on his property outside Washington, D.C.
The event, sponsored by the Kennedy Lecture Series and the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology, is free and open to the public.
