ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University junior Meghan Gilkey is one of three Ohio students selected for the Ohio Campus Compact 1999 Charles J. Ping Student Community Service Award.
A hearing and speech sciences major from Chagrin Falls, Gilkey is Circle K president and Alpha Phi Omega vice president for service. She is a member of the Red Cross and the National Students for Speech Language Hearing Association.
"I just can't imagine coming to school and only going to class. I've learned so much outside of the classroom and met so many different people," Gilkey said. "They don't teach you this in a classroom."
Ohio Campus Compact is an organization of 39 Ohio colleges and universities that was established to support the development of student and institutional participation in community and public service.
Named for Charles J. Ping, president emeritus of Ohio University, the award is given annually and is designed to recognize and honor undergraduate students' outstanding leadership and contributions to their campus and community. Candidates are nominated by the president of their college or university and are expected to meet community support and service criteria. Katharyne Louise Marcus from the College of Wooster and Ben Holman of Marietta College also received the Ping Award.
Gilkey has also been named Ohio University's representative for the John Templeton Foundation interviews in which student leaders from Campus Compact schools will interview college and university presidents about higher education's civic responsibility and the role of service in character development.
