Back-to-School Free Class Special Offered Again at Ohio University-Zanesville

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (July 31, 2000) -- Neal Adams wanted to attend a workshop at Ohio University-Zanesville this spring, but he waited too long to enroll and was closed out of the class. The name of the workshop? Overcoming Procrastination. "They should enroll people in that workshop in reverse order; whoever waits the longest should get in first," Adams quipped. "Obviously, anyone who signed up early did not need to learn about Overcoming Procrastination." The 53-year-old Dresden resident finally got into the workshop this summer, though he certainly already knows a thing or two about procrastination. Adams first attended Ohio University-Zanesville in 1974, taking classes occasionally until 1978, when he started working at the Post Office in Coshocton and his schedule did not allow him to continue with school. Last summer, Adams saw an advertisement which said OU-Zanesville was offering a free class to anyone who had not attended school in the last five years, and did not already have a bachelor's degree. Adams explained, "If you went to visit OU-Zanesville's booth at the mall, they would even waive the registration fee when you apply. How could I pass that up?" He didn't pass it up, and enrolled in a history class, The U.S. and the Vietnam War. He felt comfortable because he was interested in the subject, he enjoyed his professor, and there were a few other students about his age in class. "You're never too old to stop learning," Adams said. "It's just fun going to class again. It's enjoyable to get with other people and exchange ideas. Every class I take leads to something else that I'm interested in." Winter quarter, he signed up for another class, Liability & Responsibility in the Law. This spring he did get enrolled in a philosophy course on the New Testament. Dr. John Arnold, Professor of Philosophy, who taught both classes, decided to nominate Adams as the Outstanding Philosophy student on the Zanesville campus. "I was surprised and honored to receive the philosophy award," Adams said. "But I guess it's a mixed blessing. It feels like a challenge for me to continue on with school and finish my degree." Adams is considering enrolling in the Bachelor of Specialized Studies Program, which lets him tailor a degree especially to his interests, and enables him to receive college credit for the experience he's received in the 22 years since he last attended school. Regardless, he does plan to return to the Zanesville Campus this fall, and Ohio University is definitely a part of his life anyway. His father is retired from the Zanesville Campus, and his brother is presently employed on the main campus in Athens. Ohio University-Zanesville will once again offer that same free class promotion that prompted Adams to get back into the academic swing of things. For the answers to all your education questions, and to learn about the five percent tuition reduction for first and second year students, stop by Ohio University-Zanesville's booth at Colony Square Mall August 5 - 11, anytime from 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. For more information, Contact the Office of Student Services at 740/588-1439 or e-mail to conner@ohio.edu
