ATHENS, Ohio (May 18, 2000) -- Ernest Leon Anderson, Associate Professor in the
Department of Sociology and Anthropology, College of Arts and Sciences, Ohio University,
has been named chair-elect of the Poverty, Class, and Inequality Division of the Society for the
Study of Social Problems (SSSP). Anderson will serve as chair-elect until the 2001 meetings,
then as division chair from 2001-03.
Anderson joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1988 and is the author of
numerous articles, reviews, book chapters, and books on a wide range of social problems including
"Down on Their Luck: a Study of Homeless Street People" with David A. Snow in 1993
Founded in 1951, the Society for the Study of Social Problems is an international and
interdisciplinary professional academic organization devoted to the social scientific study of
social problems. Anderson is currently serving a second term on the editorial board of
the SSSP journal, Social Problems.
The chair-elect of the Poverty, Class, and Inequality Division of the SSSP assists the
current chair, Keith Kilty of Ohio State University, in publicizing the contributions of social
scientists to issues of social inequality, particularly in the United States. They also work to
enhance opportunities for social scientists to influence public policy regarding this and other
issues, as well as organize sessions for the annual SSSP meetings.
