ATHENS, Ohio (August 24, 2000) -- Ohio University Public Television recently received the National
Trolley Award from Fred Rogers of the familiar PBS children's program Mister.
Rogers' Neighborhood. The Trolley Award is given to public television stations
that show outstanding performance in children's services and programming. Ohio
University Public Television received this prestigious award because of the
hard work and dedication delivered through the Outreach Department.
The Outreach Department at WOUB/WOUC-TV provides over 37 counties in the region
with Help Me Grow workshops. The Help Me Grow workshops provide information to
caregivers and the families they serve on the importance of nurturing children
from birth to three years old. This year, the Outreach Department coordinated
90 Help Me Grow workshops in just three months. Participants in these
workshops learn the importance of using developmentally appropriate practices
while caring for children during this crucial period of a child's life.
Workshops focus on using different forms of media, both books and educational
children's programs; communication, social and emotional issues; proper health
care and child development. Mark Brewer, Director of Programming and Outreach
feels, "All of our children's programming focus on issues related to these
topics. The workshops are an excellent opportunity to refresh and remind child
care providers just how important their role is in a child's life."
WOUB/WOUC-TV received a large wooden trolley car signed by Fred Rogers himself
that says, "Congratulations to our neighbors at WOUB/WOUC-TV, Ohio University
Public Television. With kindest regards, Fred Rogers, 2000."
