ATHENS, Ohio (August 21, 2000) -- Theodore "Ted" Jones, retiring director of campus safety at Ohio University, has been honored by colleagues statewide through the establishment of an award named in his honor.
The Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) established the Theodore S. Jones Service Award to recognize a police chief who exemplifies the highest professional and personal standards, leadership, courage and vision impacting the profession. Fittingly, the first award, a bronze replica of a flying eagle mounted on a wooden base, was presented to Jones, 60, at the association's recent annual meeting in Columbus.
"Any time that you are recognized by your peers for making a contribution to your profession, it is most significant," Jones said. "When your peers say that you've established a benchmark for others, there can be no higher professional honor. This award belongs to many others who have shared their experiences with me over the years and helped me along the way."
Jones, who joined the university in February 1988, has announced his retirement and will leave Ohio University when a replacement is named this fall.
He is past president of the OACP and has been a district representative on the executive board, a member of the publication committee, chair of the education committee for the past 10 years and a consultant with the association. As general chairman of the State Associations of Chiefs of Police for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, he met with President Bush at the White House.
"There has been no individual among our ranks who has devoted the time and energy that Ted Jones has in furthering the mission and goals of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police," said OACP President Brad K. Kunze. "For 20-plus years, he has devoted his time and energy in involvement with OACP activities and in selfless devotion to programs and services that assist our chiefs of police."
Jones holds an associate's degree in police science from Hocking College and a bachelor's degree in organizational communication from Ohio University. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College.
Prior to joining the Ohio University Department of Campus Safety, Jones was with the City of Athens Police Department for 23 years, the last 15 as chief of police. He graduated from Athens County's Alexander High School.
