Ohio University Announces Promotions in Student Affairs Division

ATHENS, Ohio (August 18, 2000) -- Four staff promotions within Ohio University's Division of Student Affairs were announced today by Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Sostarich. Those who have been promoted to new positions are:

  1. Terrence J. Hogan has been promoted to dean of students. Hogan, 45, has served as interim dean of students for the past two years. He has been employed by Ohio University in various positions since 1979, including associate dean of students, assistant dean of students, director of the Center for Community Service and director of student activities. Hogan earned a bachelor of science degree in radio-television in 1977, a master of arts degree in organizational communication in 1983 and a doctorate in higher education administration in 1992, all from Ohio University.

  2. Richard Carpinelli has been promoted to assistant vice president and director of Baker University Center. Carpinelli, 39, has served as interim assistant to the vice president for student affairs for the past two years and as director of University Judiciaries since 1986. He previously held positions in residence life at Slippery Rock (Pa.) University and Ohio University. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Slippery Rock in 1983 and a master of education degree in college student personnel from Ohio University in 1987. He has been employed by Ohio University since 1984.

  3. Judy Piercy has been promoted to director of University Judiciaries. Piercy, 46, has served as assistant director for the past two years. Previously, she was assistant director of residence life for nine years. She earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Quincy University in Illinois in 1976 and a master of arts degree in counselor education from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies in 1989. She has held positions at Illinois State University, Western Illinois University, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and West Virginia Institute of Technology in the areas of residence life, counseling and admissions. Piercy has been employed by Ohio University since 1989.

  4. Merle Graybill has been promoted to director of the Center for Community Service. Graybill, 45, has served as interim director at the center since 1998 and, before that, as interim director of student services in the College of Education. She first entered the field of higher education in 1988 as an adviser at the University of Wisconsin-Madison following 15 years of experience in human services. Graybill earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Union Institute in 1979 and a master of education degree in educational administration from Ohio University in 1995. She also is a licensed social worker. Graybill has been employed by Ohio University since 1993.

"These promotions will further strengthen the Division of Student Affairs and will allow us to continue to provide programs and services that enrich the educational experience of our students and the quality of campus life," Sostarich said. "I am pleased to have Dr. Hogan, Mr. Carpinelli, Ms. Piercy and Ms. Graybill advance in their careers and take on more responsible roles on campus."

The promotions of Carpinelli, Hogan and Piercy became effective on Aug. 15, and Graybill's promotion took effect July 1.
