Faculty Mentor for the 2000 L.J. Hortin Award
ATHENS, Ohio (August 15, 2000) -- The College of Communication announces a new award to recognize faculty commitment to student mentoring: the L.J. Hortin Faculty Mentor Award.
Thankful for career-long mentoring from journalism Professor L.J. Hortin, alumnus Tom Kuby, BSJ '55, initiated the award, provided in his estate for its endowment and contributed a cash gift for the 2000 recipient.
The award will be given to one current or former faculty member each fall. A current faculty winner may use the award money to enhance teaching or scholarly pursuits. An award recipient now in retirement or working at another institution may suggest ways to apply the award to the College.
College of Communication alumni are encouraged to nominate a current or former faculty member by writing to Dean Kathy Krendl via email: (krendl@ohio.edu), fax: (740) 593-0459 or mail: RTV 497, Ohio University, Athens OH 45701. Letters should explain how an instructor exemplified commitment to the personal and professional development of his/her students through:
- Establishing an ongoing mentoring relationship with students that resulted in a significant impact on students' career development
- Providing personal and professional advice that extended beyond the classroom experience
Nominations received by Oct. 10 will be considered for the 2000 award. Those received after Oct. 10 will be held for the 2001 award.
Nominations will be reviewed by a committee that includes one student leader and one graduate from each of the College's schools now serving on the College's Society of Alumni and Friends Board. Current board members are Neal Baker, BSC '80; Martin Dombey, BSC '80; Mary Ann Edwards, BSJ '73; Amy Frisch, BSC '95; Pat Gentile, BS '72; Lisa Griffis, BFA '81, MA '84; Irene Kehayas, BSC '90; Laurie Sheridan Lach, BSC '92; Wendy Matthews, BSJ '97 and Marlon Primes, BSJ '86.
