Bobcats Bonewit and Bresser to Compete in U.S. Olympic Trials
ATHENS, Ohio (August 9, 2000) -- Two Bobcat swimmers are
competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis
this week. Hollie Bonewit (Athens) and Emily Bresser
(Crestview Hills, Ky.) are among the participants in
this week's activities, vying for a spot on the U.S.
Team for the 2000 Olympics.
Bonewit is competing in the 400 individual medley and
the 100 and 200 breaststroke. In action on Wednesday
morning, Bonewit finished 44th of 92 competitors in the
400 IM with a time of 5:01.21.
Bonewit earned All-America honors this past season as a
senior for the Bobcats after placing 12th at the NCAA
Championships in the 200 breaststroke. She enters this
week's Trials ranked 42nd in the world in the 200
breaststroke.
Bresser will compete in the 100 and 200 backstroke as a
member of the Anderson Barracudas club team. She was a
third-team GTE Academic All-America this season as a
junior.
Teammate Kim van Selm, who will be a junior in 2000-01,
competed in the South African Olympic trials. After
placing first in the 400 and 800 meter freestyle and
second in the 200 free style, she was not picked to
represent her country in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Her
world-ranked times in the 400 and 800 were new continent
records.
