'Writer's Digest' Ranks E.W. Scripps School
of Journalism No. 5 Nationwide
ATHENS, Ohio (June 21, 2000) -- Writer's Digest magazine has ranked Ohio University's E.W. Scripps
School of Journalism No. 5 in the nation.
The July 2000 issue of the magazine ranks journalism programs in the United States,
ranking Northwestern University as No.1 followed by Columbia University, University of
Missouri, University of Georgia and Ohio University.
"We took nominations from our staff and from contributing writers," said Melanie
Rigney, editor of the magazine. "It seems as if Ohio University has had a stellar record of
turning out excellent journalists, particularly magazine journalists. They obviously produce
excellent graduates who are ready to hit the ground running."
Published by F&W Publications in Cincinnati, Writer's Digest is considered the premier
magazine for free-lance writers.
"To be recognized by Writer's Digest as being one of the top five journalism programs
in the country is a tribute to the respect the journalism profession has for our program," said
Eddith Dashiell, assistant director for undergraduate studies at Scripps. "The E.W. Scripps
School of Journalism is proud of this recognition and the faculty is dedicated to maintaining
a quality program worthy of such a ranking."
The July issue of the magazine will be available on newsstands June 26.
