ATHENS, Ohio (June 7, 2000) -- Ohio lacrosse head coach Anne Moelk recently announced the addition of eight signees for the 2001 season. Jennifer Cassidy (Whitby, Ont.), Emily Hemmelgarn (Worthington), Lyndsay Keys (Whitby, Ont.), Shari Kolmer (Fallston, Md.), Melissa Menna (Downingtown, Pa.), Becky Oxman (Haverford, Pa.), Katie Peksa (Salisbury, Md.) and Courtney Santelli (Pittsburgh, Pa.) have all agreed to join the Bobcat lacrosse team.
Emily Hemmelgarn, a 5-4 attacker from Thomas Worthington High School, served as a Great Lakes Team alternate for the 2000 National Tournament. "I have seen Emily grow as a player since her sophomore year," said Moelk. "Her positive attitude and willingness to learn and be a role player will be important to our young team next year."
Melissa Menna (5-5, Attack/Midfielder), Becky Oxman (5-9, Midfielder) and Courtney Santelli (5-4, Attack/Midfielder) come to the Ohio team from the state of Pennsylvania. Menna, from Downingtown, Pa., was named to the All-Chester County First Team in 2000 and was an honorable mention All-Chesmont in 1999. She has lettered in both field hockey and lacrosse. "Melissa had a terrific senior year, and has worked very hard on her speed and strength and will be an immediate contributor to the program next year," said Moelk.
Oxman, from Haverford, Pa., served as varsity captain for both her field hockey and basketball teams during her senior year. She was named a 1999 honorable mention All-Main Line Field Hockey. "Someone who will come into her own as a collegiate lacrosse player, Becky has great size and the tenacity to go along with it," said Moelk. "She is determined to have the ball in her stick or see that one her teammates is in possession. She has great speed."
Santelli, from Pittsburgh, Pa., served as captain of her field hockey and lacrosse teams during her senior year. "A speedy player with a great deal of hockey sense and competitiveness, Courtney will bring maturity to the large freshman class," said Moelk.
Joining the Bobcat team from Maryland will be Shari Kolmer (5-6, midfielder/defense) and Katie Peksa (5-9, defense). Kolmer, from Fallston, Md., is a letterwinner in both basketball and lacrosse, while Peksa, from Salisbury, Md., is an All-Conference Volleyball Player who has played on Bayside volleyball and basketball championship teams. "Shari is a rising player who will be hitting her stride in lacrosse during her four years at Ohio, and is the type of defender that we are looking to help push us to the next level," said Moelk. "Katie, on the other hand, has utilized her basketball skills and her height to help her become a strong defender in lacrosse after just her second year playing lacrosse. The best thing about Katie is that she is so new to the sport of lacrosse that every day is a new and fun experience to her."
Jennifer Cassidy (5-6, goalie) and Lyndsay Keys (5-10, midfielder), both from Whitby, Ont., were members of the Under-19 Canadian World Cup team, which won a bronze medal at the World Cup in Perth, Australia in 1999. They are currently playing with Canada's Senior Women's World Cup team. Keys has also won MVP honors for volleyball and basketball. "Jen will bring amazing enthusiasm for sports, particularly lacrosse to the team, and her experience as a hockey coach has made her a true leader-by-action on the field," said Moelk. "Lynz has great size and is a smart and patient player. Her international experience will be invaluable to us next year."
