ATHENS, Ohio (June 6, 2000) -- Ohio men's basketball coach Larry Hunter recently announced that Kevin Shorter has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to join the Bobcats in 2000-01.
Shorter hails from Chippewa High School in Clinton Township, Mich., where he played for Kevin Voss. Last season the 6-8, 215 forward averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and five steals as he led his squad to a 14-8 record. Shorter was rated the fifth-best forward in Michigan by Prep Spotlight after earning first-team All-Metro East and All-MAC Red Conference honors. He was also tabbed a second-team All-Macomb County selection.
"Kevin is a very long, athletic, versatile and talented player," described Hunter. "As his stats indicate, he can impact the outcome of a game many different ways at both ends of the court. We feel very fortunate to get this caliber of a person and player this late in the recruiting process.
"Kevin needs to get stronger, but he has the skills to play both away from the basket and to score inside the paint. He runs the floor very well and works hard at defending and contesting shots. He has a big upside with lots of potential. He will compete for playing time at several positions and will fit in well with the make up of our team. He is an impressive young man with a very engaging personality."
Shorter is the son of Sheila and Tony McBride. His stepfather Tony is an assistant basketball coach at Martin Luther King High School. Shorter spent the last three years in Michigan after growing up in Aurora, Colorado.
