Ohio Baseball Announces 2000 Team Awards

ATHENS, Ohio (May 31, 2000) -- Ohio baseball head coach Joe Carbone recently
announced the 2000 team awards.
Senior captain Jeff Rook (Fairfield) was named the team's
Defensive Player of the Year. Rook, who played most of his career at
first base, also played at third base and in the outfield this season
when he wasn't pitching for the Bobcats. Rook was also effective
offensively as he broke Ohio's all-time season record for home runs
with 17, breaking the previous record of 16 that he set in 1999. He
also owns the single-season record in strikeouts with 58. And, he owns
career records in home runs, runs batted in, runs scored and
strikeouts. Rook was named to the Mid-American Conference Second-Team
at first base.
Senior left-hander Tony Schiml (Dayton) was given the Most
Valuable Pitcher award after posting a league-and team-leading 9-2
record this season. Schiml, who has signed a major-bonus contract with
the Boston Red Sox, was named Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the
Year and to the All-MAC First Team and All-MAC Tournament Team. He
finishes his career at Ohio third on the all-time season records list
for complete games with eight and fourth for wins in a season with nine.
Junior Ryan Kyes (White Lake, Mich.) garnered two awards for
his offensive production this season. He was awarded the Frank
Baumholtz Award for posting the team's highest batting average and he
garnered the Bob Wren Offensive Efficiency Award. In 57 games this
season, Kyes hit .390 with 82 hits, 56 runs and 12 home runs in 210
at-bats. He was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week twice
this season (March 6 and April 25) and was tabbed to the All-MAC
Second-Team. He also broke Jason Graham's single season record for
total bases with 140.
Other team award winners included sophomores Cory Keylor
(Westerville) and Mike Arbinger (Toledo) who were awarded the Bob Adams
Award for Outstanding Sophomores. Seniors Matt Reed (Zanesville) and
Bryan Costin (North Ridgeville) and junior Kevin Sullivan (Toledo)
garnered Alumni Association Scholar-Athlete Awards for posting grade
point averages of 3.0 or better. Juniors Andrew See (Adrian, Mich) and
Ryan Kyes were named co-captains for the 2001 season. And junior Chuck
Lombardy (Chagrin Falls) earned the Skip Bosler Award in its inaugural
season, which is given by the athletic training staff to the player who
has overcome a serious injury while rehabbing with an athletic training
staff member and made a contribution to the team.
Ohio finished its season 31-25-1 overall and 20-12 in league
play after dropping its game against Miami in the semifinal of the
Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday, May 19.
