Ohio's Tony Schiml Earns MAC Pitcher of the Year Honors

KENT, Ohio (May 17, 2000) -- Ohio senior Tony Schiml was tabbed Mid-American Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday, May 17, after he also earned a spot on the MAC Pepsi All-MAC First Team. Senior Jeff Rook, junior Ryan Kyes and sophomore Cory Keylor were named to the MAC Pepsi All-MAC Second-Team. The awards, which were voted on by the league's 12 coaches, were announced at the MAC baseball tournament, which was held at Kent.

Tony Schiml (Dayton), a left-handed pitcher, is the first Ohio pitcher to garner Pitcher of the Year honors. He finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and a 4.38 ERA. In conference play, he went undefeated with a league-leading 7-0 record and a 2.47 ERA. Before the tournament, he had struck out 61 batters in 76 innings pitched.

Schiml's performance during the regular season earned him a unanimous All-MAC First-Team selection. He was also named to the MAC All-Tournament team after his complete seven-inning win against Ball State in game one of the MAC Tournament.

With a .989 fielding percentage and a batting average of .293, Jeff Rook (Fairfield) earned All-MAC Second-Team honors. Rook had 48 hits in 164 at-bats in the regular season with 42 RBI. He broke Ohio's All-Time Season Record for home runs, which he set in 1999, after hitting his 17th home run of the season in game nine of the MAC Tournament in a loss against Miami.

Ryan Kyes (White Lake Mich.), who was ranked third in the league in hits and individual batting and tied for third in runs scored, led the team with his .400 regular-season batting average. Kyes had 78 hits in 195 at-bats during the regular season with a team-leading 55 runs, 12 home runs and 43 RBI earning him All-MAC Second-Team honors.

After posting a .693 slugging percentage and .349 batting average, Cory Keylor (Westerville) was tabbed to the All-MAC Second Team. Keylor had 58 hits in 166 at-bats with 36 runs, 13 home runs and a team-leading 45 RBI during the regular season. He was also second on the team with 14 doubles.
