ATHENS, Ohio (May 17, 2000) -- Ohio men's basketball coach Larry Hunter recently
announced that Alex Liatsos has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to
play men's basketball at Ohio University in 2000-01.
Liatsos (6-7, 220) joins the Bobcats as a junior after playing
two seasons at Olney Central Community College (Ill.). Under head coach
Jim Glash at Olney, the forward averaged 11.5 points, 6.6 rebounds and
3.5 assists per game. He posted shooting percentages over 50 percent
from the field and on three-pointers and 78 percent from the free-throw
line.
Born and raised in Limassol, Cyprus, Liatsos has spent the last
three years in the United States. He came to the U.S. for his senior
year at River Rouge High School in Detroit and played for the school's
state championship team. Among his high school teammates were fellow
Division I college players Duez Henderson (Iowa) and Brent Darby (Ohio
State).
Liatsos also brings international experience to the Bobcat
squad. He is currently competing in Olympic qualifying in Denmark as a
member of the Cyprus National Team.
"Alex is a very athletic, versatile and talented big man," said
Hunter. "He will get playing time at several positions and will fit in
well with the make up our team the next two years. As his stats would
indicate, he has the ability to help his team in a lot of different
ways. He is very intelligent and has a very engaging personality."
Earlier this month, Liatsos earned his associate's degree in
business from Olney with a 3.6 GPA. He plans to major in sports
marketing at Ohio. Alexandros Liatsos is the son of Antonios and Janet
Liatsos.
