ATHENS, Ohio (May 12, 2000) -- More than 80 members of the Ohio University class of 1950 are
returning to campus to rekindle old friendships during Golden Reunion events this
weekend. A total of 83 former classmates from 14 states have registered for activities
that combine nostalgia with a look at current events at their alma mater.
"This weekend offers alumni an opportunity to re-connect with Ohio University, which
played a special role in their lives," said Judith Johnson, assistant director for societies
and campus relations at Ohio University.
Among notable alumni who will be in attendance are Jenny Grasselli Brown of Chagrin
Falls, a former scientist for British Petroleum; Milt Taylor, former class president and
president of Taylor Motors in Lancaster; former Gen. Robert and Lois Arter of
Leavenworth, Kan.; and Athens residents Jessie Essex and Sallie Roberts. Members of
the steering committee are Roy Blinn, Canton; Kent Chapman, Cleveland; and Phil
Schmidt, Naples, Fla.
The weekend's events begin with registration and reminiscing from 3-8 p.m. Friday, May
12, at the Ohio University Inn. A reception and dinner will follow.
Activities on Saturday, May 13, include a bus tour of campus at 10 a.m. and college
displays and updates from deans of the colleges from 1:30-3 p.m. at Baker Center. Ohio
University President Robert Glidden will host a reception at the President's House at 6
p.m. Saturday, followed by a dinner and induction of the class of 1950 into the Golden
Society.
A farewell breakfast Sunday morning at the Ohio University Inn will conclude events. A
highlight of the weekend will be the announcement of three recipients of the Faculty
Excellence Awards, which were endowed by the class of '50. The recipients will be
introduced during lunch at noon Saturday in the Baker Center State Room.
