Ohio Swimming and Diving Announces 1999-2000 Team Awards
Vetnes, Bonewit and van Selm Named Team MVPs

Athens, Ohio (May 11, 2000) -- Ohio swimming and diving head coach Greg Werner
recently announced the 1999-2000 team awards. Seniors Vermund Vetnes
(Hafrsjord, Norway) and Hollie Bonewit (Athens) and sophomore Kim van
Selm (Durban, South Africa) were named Ed Wright Award recipients for
the team MVP.
Vermund Vetnes garnered MVP honors after his performance at the
Mid-American Conference Championships, which also earned him an All-MAC
First Team selection. At the MAC Championships, he won the
100-butterfly with a season-best time of 48.72. He also helped his
800-relay team to a second-place finish and the 200-relay team to a
fifth-place finish.
All-American Hollie Bonewit was named team MVP after winning
the 200-breaststroke with a MAC record-breaking time of 2:14.19. The
win qualified her for the NCAA Championships, where she took a
12th-place finish. Bonewit is ranked 42nd in the world in the event.
MAC Swimmer of the Year Kim van Selm earned the MVP honors
after winning three individual championships to help Ohio to its first
MAC title since 1995. Van Selm, who recently broke three African
records at the South Africa Olympic Trials, is also ranked among the
world's best swimmers ranking 40th in the 200-fresstyle, 36th in the
400-freestyle and 49th in the 800-freestyle.
Seniors Jill Schumacher (Cincinnati) and Brian Billips
(Pickerington) were honored with the Tad Potter Memorial Award, which
is given to the participants who exemplifies courage, conduct,
leadership, spirit and loyalty. Junior Claire Madonia (Flushing, NY)
and sophomore Stephen Stanley (Yorktown, Va.) were awarded the Fletcher
Gildereds Memorial Award for most improved team members. And juniors
Emily Bresser (Crestview Hills, Ky.), Josh Schrage (Cincinnati) and
Rachel White (Cincinnati) and sophomore Jonathan Friend (Charlotte, NC)
were named team captains for the 2000-01 season.
The Ohio women's team won the MAC Championships in March. The
men's team finished the season by placing third in the MAC tournament.
