ATHENS, Ohio (May 10, 2000) -- A memorial service for Ohio University student Cory G. Lewis will
take place at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 15 in Galbreath Chapel on the College Green.
Lewis died March 29 from heart failure. The memorial service was arranged to provide
Lewis' Athens friends and classmates a chance to share their memories of him.
Following the on-campus service, a tree will be planted in Lewis' memory on the
East Green, and a reception will be held in his honor at the Ohio University Inn, where
he worked as a guest-service representative.
Diagnosed with heart problems two years ago, Lewis managed to remain an
energetic, polite and fun-loving young man, according to all who knew him. Ohio
University Inn general manager Jason Kruel said, "Cory was very people-oriented. He
was a huge addition to the morale of the hotel staff and gave the whole place a boost."
The interpersonal communications major was forced to return home last year
because of health problems, but decided to come back to Ohio University because of his
fondness for the school. A native of Lincolnshire, Ill., a Chicago suburb, Lewis often told
family and friends that Athens was his "favorite place in the world." Lewis' sister, Katie,
a senior in high school, is considering attending Ohio University next fall after glowing
recommendations from her brother.
"Cory had a tremendous impact on many people on campus during the time he
was with us," said Interim Dean of Students Terry Hogan. "He will be sorely missed."
