Ohio Men Second, Women Third at Akron Quad Meet
Akron, Ohio (May 7, 2000) -- The Ohio men's and women's track and field teams competed in a quad meet at Akron
on Saturday, finishing second in men's action and third in women's. The Bobcats had one of their best outings of
the season, posting 32 season-best individual marks with five first-place finishes.
Kent claimed the team title for both the men and women. In men's action, the Golden Flashes scored 188.50 points,
while Ohio followed in second with 165.50 points. Akron was third (149), while Bowling Green was fourth (126).
Kent's women scored 242 points, followed by Akron in second at 171. The Bobcats were third at 142, while Bowling Green
scored 95 points.
Sophomore Melody Royster (Heath) set a meet record with a 13.93 in the 100-meter hurdles, while teammate junior
Jackie Waller (New Port Richey, Fla.) claimed the title in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:54.70. Royster
also placed in the 100 meters (6th - 12.22) and the 200 meters (7th - 25.29). Freshman Jana Dearth (Bluffton) also
placed in both dashes, ranking fifth in the 100 meters (12.12) and fourth in the 200 meters (24.72).
In men's action, sophomore Chris London (Youngstown) also set a meet record with a long jump of 7.21 meters
(23'08.00). Senior Dennis Russo (Rockaway Township, N.J.) grabbed the javelin title with a throw of 61.48 meters
(201'08.00). Sophomore Kyle Sheer (Bradford) paced three Bobcats in the top four of the high jump with a leap of
2.06 meters (6'09.00) as Brent Horst (Athens) finished third and Nate Noel (Athens) claimed fourth.
Freshman Martin Jackson (Hilliard) placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time
of 20.78 seconds.
The Bobcats will play host to the Ohio Open on Saturday, May 13 with events scheduled to begin at noon.
