Ohio Baseball Completes MAC Sweep of Bowling Green

ATHENS, Ohio (May 7, 2000) -- Ohio baseball swept the weekend series from Bowling Green, winning both games of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Sunday, May 7, at Bob Wren Stadium. Junior Jeremy Johnson's (Newark) three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh won game one for the Bobcats, 11-10. Ohio pulled away from Bowling Green in the late innings to win game two, 8-1. Ohio completed the sweep after winning both games on Saturday.

After Bowling Green took a 10-8 lead in the seventh by scoring two runs in the top of the inning, Ohio rallied for three runs in the last half. Senior Jeff Rook (Fairfield) led off the inning with a walk; junior Andrew See (Adrian, Mich.) singled; and then Johnson hit Ryan Streb's first pitch to him over the center field wall.

Ohio scored four runs on five singles in the first to take an early lead, but Bowling Green quickly tied it in the top of the second, scoring four runs on four hits.

Senior Brian Costin (North Ridgeville) got the final two outs in the seventh for his second victory in 11 relief appearances for Ohio. Streb (1-3) took the loss for the Falcons.

In Game two, Ohio erupted for five runs in the fourth inning and added three more in the sixth to defeat Bowling Green. Senior Brian Wingfeld (Shelbyville Ky.) had three hits and scored twice for the Bobcats.

Ohio received RBI hits in the fifth from senior Chuck Lombardy (Chagrin Falls), sophomore Scott Brownlee (Tallmadge), Wingfeld and See. Junior Joe Carlone (Highland Heights) hit a sacrifice fly to score Brownlee in the inning.

Ohio moves into second place in the East Division of the MAC behind Kent with its four-game sweep of Bowling Green. The Bobcats will travel to Lexington, Ky., on Wednesday, May 10, to face the University of Kentucky. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
