Journalism Day Features Oklahoma City Bombing Reporters

ATHENS, Ohio (April 28, 2000) -- Reporters who covered the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing will share their experiences as part of Journalism Day Thursday, May 4, at Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.

"When Disaster Strikes: Covering Crisis," a panel discussion at 10 a.m. in Anderson Auditorium, will include Terri Watkins of KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City; Maury Possley of The Chicago Tribune; Nolan Clay of The Daily Oklahoman and Rick Serrano of The Los Angeles Times.

Prior to the discussion, veteran newsman Sander Vanocur of NBC News will receive the Carr Van Anda Award for his distinguished service to journalism. Other panel discussions include:

  • "Business to Business Publications: A Fast Track for All Journalism Majors" from 9 to 10 a.m. in room 111 of Scripps Hall includes Robert Grace, editor and associate publisher of Plastics News; Elisa Modugno, assistant managing editor of Phillips Communications; and Brian Berger, a writer for Science News.
  • "Leveraging Internships" from 10 a.m. to noon in room 114 features Andrea Tortora, education reporter at The Cincinnati Enquirer; Darin Painter, managing editor for FORM magazine; Michelle Howry, editor of Writers Digest Books; Kate Brennan, associate editor for Lodging Hospitality magazine and Tracey Noe, senior manager for executive communications at Blue Cross Blue Shield.
  • "Jobs in the Magazine Industry" from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 212 includes Allison Stacy, associate editor for Family Tree magazine; Mary Newman, managing editor for Real Estate Business; Darin Painter, managing editor for FORM and Melody Sands, an instructor at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.
  • "Career Counseling: Resume Critique and Mock Interviews" runs from 2 to 5 p.m. in rooms 107, 108, 114 and 116 in Scripps Hall.
  • "New Media and ..." from 2 to 3 p.m. in rooms 107, 108, 114 and 116 features Jim Ambrosio, vice president of content development for Tramp Steamer Media; Jill Wigal, a senior account executive with PR 21; and other panelists to be announced.

Journalism Day is part of Communication Week, which celebrates the five schools of the College of Communication and encourages student interaction with leaders in the communication field.
