Ohio Women's Golf Finishes Second
at 2000 MAC Championships
Hamilton, Ohio (April 30, 2000) -- Ohio finished second at the 2000 Mid-American Conference
Women's Golf Championship on Sunday after posting a three-round score of 925. The Bobcats
were in second place after each round, unable to catch defending champion Kent. Three Bobcats
were honored with individual conference awards as senior Heather Fueger and junior Julee
Sovesky garnered first-team All-MAC and freshman Candace Artz was named second-team
All-MAC.
Head coach Ann Slater was impressed with her team's ability to stay focused. "We played some
outstanding golf and gave Kent a run for their money. The number one thing that we did in this
tournament was to stay patient, taking the bad breaks with the good. Even when we got off to slow
starts today, the players stayed focused to improve their scores."
Junior Julee Sovesky (New Castle, Pa.) paced the Bobcats with a fifth-place finish at 227. It marks
her eighth top 10 finish in 10 tournaments this season, keeping alive her streak of finishing in the
top 25 in every event.
Senior Hayley Amerine (South Bloomingville) ended her career with her best golf. Entering the
tournament with a career-best 81, she topped that in every round with scores of 80, 75 and 79. She
finished in a career-best sixth-place with a 234.
"This weekend was the best golf I ever played," said Amerine. "I'm glad I saved it for this
tournament. We played well today, but Kent has a lot of talent and just out-played us."
After posting a MAC and course record round of 71 on Saturday, senior Heather Fueger (W.
Lafayette, Ind.) struggled in the final round but pulled out a tie for seventh place. It marked her
seventh top 10 finish as she has finished in the top 20 in all but one tournament this season.
"My 71 was one of the best rounds I've played collectively in my career," explained Fueger. " I did
the best I could on every shot on the course. The fact that it was a course record and a tournament
record and that I did it in the MAC Championship makes it that much more special."
Freshman Candace Artz (Stow) tied Fueger for seventh with a 235, while fellow freshman Diane
Rubin (Paris, Ohio) was 21st with a 250. Junior Julie Harter (Middletown) tied for 25th with a 251.
Ohio closes its fourth season of varsity play with its most impressive numbers. The team posted
nine top-five finishes in 10 tournaments, including three tournament titles.
