ATHENS, Ohio (April 27, 2000) -- Ohio swimming and diving senior Kim van Selm
(Durban, So. Africa) took three first-place finishes and set three
African records at the South Africa Olympic Trials. The final
selections for those who will compete on the Olympic team will be
announced at the end of May.
Van Selm won the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:17.46, the 800
freestyle with a time of 8:51.57 and the 800 freestyle relay with a
time of 8:30.22. All three times broke current African records. In
addition to her three top finishes, van Selm also took a second-place
finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.81.
At the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in March, van
Selm posted some of her personal-best times of 4:16.46 in the 400
freestyle and 2:03.21 in the 200 freestyle. She qualified for the NCAAs
during the Mid-American Conference Championships, where she was named
MAC Swimmer of the Year after winning three individual championships.
