Wellston Mayor and University Patrolman May Keep Both Jobs

ATHENS, Ohio (April 25, 2000) -- Ohio University Patrolman John Stabler, who also is the mayor of Wellston, will not be required to relinquish his job at Ohio University, according to Ohio University Director of Legal Affairs John Burns.

Burns reviewed a series of opinions by the Ohio attorney general regarding classified employees holding elected positions and met with a special counsel of the Ohio attorney general's office regarding Stabler's status.

"After consultation with the Ohio attorney general special counsel and others it has been determined Patrolman Stabler may hold both of these positions," Burns said.

"His position with Ohio University has and will continue to be monitored regarding the adequate performance of his duties. This has not been a problem in the past and Ohio University will continue to monitor his performance, which will include issues of incompatability of offices, as we do with all employees."
