ATHENS, Ohio (April 23, 2000) -- The Ohio baseball team swept Marshall in Mid-American Conference
action on Sunday, April 23, at Bob Wren Stadium. Junior Ryan Kyes hit two home runs in the first
game to lift the Bobcats over the Thundering Herd, 5-0. In game two, Ohio scored two runs in the
seventh inning to force extra innings. The Bobcats went on to win the second game, 5-4.
Ohio got on the scoreboard early after sophomore Cory Keylor (Westerville) hit a double to center
field in the first inning. The double set up junior Ryan Kyes (White Lake, Mich.), who hit a solo
home run to center field. Two innings later, it was Kyes again hitting a solo home run to center
field. It was his second of the day and 10th of the season. Ohio added two more runs in the bottom
of the sixth when Kyes drove in Keylor on a RBI single and then junior Chuck Lombardy
(Chagrin Falls) drove in Kyes on a single to right field.
Marshall's best scoring chances came in the third and fourth innings. Both times there were runners
on second and third, but Eric Pinkerton was thrown out at second in the third and Matt Eldridge
struck out in the fourth to end the innings.
Junior Denny McGee (Washington, Pa.) pitched the win on the mound for Ohio improving his
record to 4-2. In seven complete innings he allowed just three hits and struck out seven.
Steve Fowler suffered the loss for Marshall, and is now 2-5 on the season.
Marshall jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Jason Ricceri, Jason Brooks and Marty Rini all hit RBI
singles. Marshall scored a run in the top of the fifth bringing the score to 4-2.
Ohio scored in the bottom of the second when senior Jeff Rook (Fairfield) hit his 10th home run of
the season to right field and again in the bottom of the third on a ground-out by junior Adam Foust
(Westerville) driving in senior Brian Wingfeld (Shelbyville, Ky.).
But Ohio wasn't finished as they scored two runs to tie up the game in the bottom of the seventh to
force an extra inning after junior Kevin Sullivan scored off of sophomore Mike Arbinger's
(Toledo) sacrifice fly to right field and Kyes scored after Lombardy hit a double to center field.
Junior right-hander Andrew See (Adrian, Mich.) held off Marshall in the top of eighth retiring three
straight batters. Freshman Tony Gandee (Akron) scored the winning run after Arbinger hit a single
to center field.
See pitched his third win of the season and is 3-3 overall. In eight complete innings he allowed four
runs on eight hits and struck out eight batters.
Marshall's Chris Wean garnered the loss and is 3-5 overall.
Ohio will host Cincinnati on Tuesday, April 25, at Bob Wren Stadium for a non-conference game.
