Ohio University Communication Students Win SPJ Awards

Athens, Ohio (April 11, 2000) -- The Post, Southeast Ohio magazine and several Ohio University College of Communication students were winners in the 2000 Mark of Excellence regional competition hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Post won third place for the best all-around daily student newspaper and first place for the best all-around online student newspaper. Southeast Ohio magazine won second for the best student magazine published more than once a year.

Six E.W. Scripps School of Journalism students, two School of Telecommunications students and an Honors Tutorial College alumnus also won Mark of Excellence awards. Seniors Erin Sullivan and Kristen Hampshire and juniors Kara Gebhart, Rosemary Pennington, Michelle Kimbler and John Klemack, all journalism majors, and senior Jason Ludwig and sophomore Robert Yodice, both telecommunications majors, were recognized. Beau Boughamer and Yvonne Press won first place in the television daily newscast category. Boughamer is a 1999 Honors Tutorial College graduate who majored in journalism and Press is a graduate student in journalism from Leipzig, Germany.

First-place finishers Sullivan, Ludwig, Kimbler, Klemack, Yodice, Boughamer and Press will go on to compete against students in 11 other regions. Winners will be announced at the national convention in Columbus Oct. 26 through 28.

The competition is an annual event of the Society of Professional Journalists. Overall, Ohio University won five first-place, three second-place and two third-place awards in the Mark of Excellence competition. Certificates will be awarded at the Region 4 conference April 28 and 29.
