ATHENS, Ohio (March 31, 2000) -- Ohio University Police Department Lieutenant
Steve Noftz has been named officer of the year for Athens County by the
Athens County chapter of 40&8 of American Legion Post 21.
"Lieutenant Noftz has demonstrated strong commitment to his
department, profession and community," Ohio University Police Chief Ted
Jones said. "His adherence to strong professional ethics, departmental
philosophy and values coupled with his community contributions clearly
position him as an exceptional person and professional law enforcement
officer."
Noftz has worked at OUPD since 1986 in a variety of positions. He
has served as a member of the bicycle patrol unit and trains officers in
self-defense and tactical firearm techniques. As a police sketch artist,
he has provided assistance to the Athens County Sheriff's Department,
Athens Police Department, Nelsonville Police Department, and the Logan
Police Department. Four of his composites have played a direct role in
identification and apprehension of suspects.
Noftz is an active member of the community. He has taught safety
classes, drug awareness programs and self-defense workshops. The OUPD
coordinates a regional fund-raising drive for the Law Enforcement TorchRun
for Special Olympics. For the past four years, Noftz has been the top
individual fund-raiser, soliciting donations in excess of $1000 each year.
He participates in the annual Polar Bear Plunge in February at Lake Erie to
raise money for charity.
"I think this award speaks well for the campus and community,"
Noftz said. "It is great that this organization has taken the time to
recognize our law officers."
