ATHENS,
Ohio -- (March 14, 2000) Due to flooding in recent years, the West Union Street Bridge
will have to be replaced. Work officially began March 9, and will progress through the
project's conclusion in November 2000. Beginning March 27, the bridge will be
open for one lane of westbound traffic only. According to Athens Service Safety Director
Wayne Key, pedestrian traffic over the bridge will not be allowed due to safety concerns.
However, bicycles will still be able to use the bridge, as long as they move with the flow of
traffic.
Key also recommends avoiding the SR 682/Richland Avenue, and SR 682/SR 56 intersections
after March 27 because the limited traffic on West Union will most likely cause increased
-- and possibly backlogged -- traffic at these locations. Students, please be aware of this
recommendation as you return to town from Spring Break. If at all possible, please use
Columbus Road, East State Street, and Stimson Avenue as alternatives to SR 682.
