ATHENS, Ohio -- The Kennedy Museum of Art announces the opening of "Faculty Exhibition 2000: School of Art Ohio University" on February 26. The exhibition will remain on display through April 16, 2000.

"Faculty Exhibition 2000" displays the work of 34 faculty members from the School of Art at Ohio University and includes the departments of Art Education, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Visiting faculty artists are included. This is the first full faculty exhibition at Ohio University in over 30 years and marks the beginning of an era of collaboration between the School of Art and the Kennedy Museum of Art.

Kent Ahrens, museum director, commented, "We are delighted to collaborate with the School of Art in bringing this exhibition to the Kennedy Museum of Art. We have exhibited the work of faculty from the Printmaking and Ceramics Departments in the past two years. This is our first opportunity to represent the entire School of Art faculty in one exciting exhibition."

Power Boothe, Director of the School of Art stated that, "The exceptional quality of the work, over a vast range of materials, images and points of view, is an indication of the real vitality the visual arts are having right now."

The artwork of the faculty artists is represented in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles, Boston, Guggenheim and British Museums. Exhibitions by these artists include regional, national, and international, solo and group exhibitions; some have had prestigious commissions and artist residencies, and reviews of their work in well-known art publications.

To celebrate the exhibition, the Kennedy Museum and the School of Art will host a lecture by Dr. Sharon Brehm, Provost, Ohio University, on Thursday, March 30. Dr. Brehm will discuss "The Values of Art." The lecture will be held at The Ridges Auditorium at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a reception at the Kennedy Museum. This event is free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the faculty exhibition, the Kennedy Museum will be hosting the Faculty Art Series at the museum. The series is designed to give faculty artists the chance to talk about their art and answer questions relating to their work or field of study. The series begins on Thursday, March 2 and will be held from 6-7 p.m., most Thursdays, through April 13. A different artist will be present each Thursday; among the speakers will be Power Boothe, Painting, Mary Manusos, printmaking, Katherine McVety, Photography and Brad Schweiger, Ceramics. The series is free and open to the public.

In addition, the Education Gallery, hosting a selection from the museum's permanent collection of Native American jewelry and weavings donated by Edwin and Ruth Kennedy, remains on view. The gallery is an ongoing project in conjunction with local schools which provides a model for curriculum based programming at the museum.

The focus of the partnership is to integrate social studies, art, language/reading, and science with resources offered through the art museum. The gallery will provide students with the opportunity to develop critical and creative thinking skills through direct contact with art objects.

Chauncey Elementary fifth graders will visit for the fourth time on March 2. The initial phase of the partnership is funded in part by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. Museum Guides will be available on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. to provide information about the museum and current exhibitions.

The Kennedy Museum is located in Lin Hall on The Ridges at Ohio University. Regular gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free to the public.
