ATHENS, Ohio -- The Thomas Ewing Visiting Professor Committee is accepting applications for visiting professorships for 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2003.
A total of approximately $60,000 is available for these two years, $30,000 per year; this sum may be used to fund, fully or in part, one or more proposals each year.
The length of the visiting professors' appointments is variable, but one appointment for at least a quarter each year is desired. Shorter appointments are also possible, but Thomas Ewing Visiting Professor funds cannot be used for visits of less than two weeks.
The purpose of the Thomas Ewing Professorship is to expose Ohio University students and faculty to outstanding individuals and make such individuals aware of the strengths and resources of Ohio University. Thomas Ewing Professors are expected to be distinguished individuals who have attained wide recognition based upon artistic, engineering, historical, literary or scientific achievement.
Thomas Ewing Professor appointments in the hosting department are awarded by the provost, acting on the recommendations of the committee. Proposals will be evaluated based on the degree to which they meet the goals of the Thomas Ewing Professorship. Preference will be given to:
- First-time proposals
- Proposals with substantial support provided by the department or unit
- Proposals which reach a larger audience
Only in exceptional circumstances will candidates be funded for repeat visits. If a candidate is granted an appointment and is not able to fulfill his/her obligations, the professorship is not transferable.
Departments and other university units are invited to submit nominating proposals to the committee by that time. E-mails or phone calls to committee Chair Raymond Frost to express interest in submissions before this date are welcome.
Only complete applications will be considered. Applications should be written so as to be read by someone who is not an expert in your field. The application should include the following:
- Cover page indicating the name of the nominee, the hosting department or program, and the requested funding amount. The cover page should include signature endorsements by the nominator, chair/head and dean.
