A psychological look at Alzheimer's disease

ATHENS, Ohio -- The fall series of Ohio University College of OsteopathicMedicine's Geriatric Education Brown Bag seminars continues Monday, Nov. 4, withJulie Suhr, Ph.D., presenting "Psychological Aspects of Alzheimer's Disease." Theseminar will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, RoomB-9.

Suhr will describe and discuss the common cognitive and psychological symptoms ofAlzheimer's Disease, with some brief focus on assessment issues. She will alsodiscuss implications of these symptoms for the practicing clinician, both interms of diagnosis and treatment. With regard to treatment, she will touchbriefly on research in pharmacological intervention, but will spend more timediscussing non-pharmacological management techniques that have shown promise inresearch and in her clinical experience.

Suhr is a neuropsychologist in the psychology department at Ohio University, conductingresearch on the assessment of cognitive decline in various neurologicaldisorders, including dementia. She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology in1994 from the University of Iowa.

Each lecture in this series of geriatric medicine/gerontology seminars is heldfrom noon to 1 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month at O'Bleness,Room B-9.

The next seminar will be held Nov. 18 and will feature William Walker'spresentation "Legal Dilemmas of Aging: The Physician's Role in Competency." "Theseminars are designed for an interdisciplinary audience," said Ellen Peterson,R.N., OU-COM geriatric education coordinator. "Health professionals from thecommunity regularly attend, in addition to interns,residents and medicalstudents. The diversity of disciplines represented bythe participants makes foran interesting exchange of ideas."

The sponsors of the seminars include the Department of GeriatricMedicine/Gerontology, the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center and AreaHealth Education Center and OU-COM.

Peterson said the seminar series was started by a federal grant that establishedOU-COM as a contributing site to the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Centerin September 1994 and has supported many continuing education programs.

Provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, the grant supportseducational programs in geriatrics and gerontology for physicians, nurses, socialworkers, counselors and health-care providers to 22 Southeastern Ohio counties.
