ATHENS, Ohio -- William L. Haines of New York City recently gave $100,000 to the Ohio University Libraries to help fund the renovation of Alden Library's second floor. Haines, who is the president and CEO of the New York-based Bromley Development Corporation, earned his master's degree in education from Ohio University in 1965.
"We're delighted about Bill's generous commitment," said Dean of the Ohio University Libraries Julia Zimmerman. "Bill has a long history with the university, and he is widely known and respected here. We're honored that he has chosen to give to the libraries. His gift will contribute greatly to the second floor renovation, a project that is going to provide a wonderful study and learning environment for students."
The renovation will transform the second floor of Alden Library through the addition of a new Information Delivery Center that will feature a bright and lively space with electronically equipped group study rooms, modern computing facilities, expert assistance with information and study needs and ready access to the most popular materials.
The new space, which will cost an estimated $1.5 million, will be fully accessible and equipped for students with special needs. It will allow late-night activity when the rest of the library is closed and will feature a comfortable coffee shop that will become the prime gathering place for students and faculty throughout the College Green.
Haines and his wife, Angela, reside in New York City.
Haines' gift is part of the Bicentennial Campaign, which has raised more than $152 million toward its goal of raising $200 million in time for the university's bicentennial in 2004. The campaign will provide money for scholarships, endowed professorships, technological enhancements, innovative programs and selected capital improvements.
