ATHENS, Ohio -- The Office of Student Activities and the Baker University Center have joined together to sponsor "Passport to Involvement," a program in which Ohio University students can earn a chance to win free books for a quarter by attending university-sponsored events.
"Our main focus is on freshman students," said Shanna Grant, a marketing assistant for Associate Director Tim Hogan at Baker Center. "Our purpose for creating the program was to get students involved with Baker Center and other student activities on campus. By having the passport, students are rewarded for their involvement in student activities. We hope that by next year, this program will be going strong and many students will be involved. We also hope to have more prizes."
The passports are available for students at the Baker Center information desk, the Front Room and the Rec Room.
Students simply have to attend 10 university events and get their Passport to Involvement stamped at the Rec Room or Front Room by showing their ticket stubs. Students may attend events such as athletic competitions, the Performing Arts Series, Baker Nights, and the Midnight Movies at the Athena.
To end the quarter, there are several special university programs that will give students an opportunity to get their passports stamped. On Oct. 23, UPC is sponsoring the Kel Gleason Lecture in Baker University Center Ballroom starting at 8 p.m. The Baker Ballroom will also be the site of other events including: the Jitterbug Club Dance at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26, the History Department's Costa Lecture at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28, the Roger Steffens' "Life of Bob Marley" at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 and the Kwanzaa Umoja Karamu Dinner at 6 p.m. on Nov. 3.
Every Wednesday at Baker University Center there is also a euchre tournament and Open Stage with Bruce Dalzell. On Thursdays, students may participate in a pool tournament and Uptown Thursday Night. And every Friday and Saturday, students may attend Baker Nights and the UPC Midnight Movie.
The last day for students to turn in the Passport to Involvement is Sunday, Nov. 24. The drawing will be held the following day in the Rec Room.
