ATHENS, Ohio -- Two funds have been created at Ohio University-Lancaster in memory of Scott Shepherd, who died last month.
"Through his nearly 25 years as director of Student Services he met so many students who appreciated his concern and wisdom and desire for them to succeed," said Ohio University-Lancaster Dean Bari Watkins. Shepherd also was respected by his colleagues at college and university campuses across the state. He was active on the local and state levels in education and awareness of disability and accessibility issues.
A scholarship for an incoming freshman majoring in interpersonal communication will be created in Shepherd's memory. According to Diana Pollock, assistant dean for development at Ohio University, a minimum of $15,000 is needed to endow the scholarship. Since Shepherd supported student athletics on the Lancaster Campus, contributions to the planned field house also may be given in his memory.
As Ken Heineman, professor of history and former faculty chair, recently wrote, "Scott insisted on meeting students, getting to know each one's strengths and weaknesses of mind and character. Many alums of Ohio University -- those who graduated from Lancaster or from the main campus in Athens -- will tell you that Scott inspired them to persevere."
To make a contribution in Shepherd's memory, checks may be written to The Ohio University Foundation, designated for the Scott Shepherd Scholarship or for the Lancaster field house in his memory. Gifts may be mailed to the Ohio University Foundation, P.O. Box 869, Athens OH 45701. Credit card gifts may be made by calling (800) 592-FUND or by making an online gift at www.ohio.edu/campaign/giving.html. For further information, contact Pollock at (740) 654-6711, ext. 645, (dial 823-645 if calling from Athens).
