In a Web-based survey last May, 93 percent of Ohio University students agreed that the university should conserve energy and 88 percent said they should personally help. While students agreed saving energy was important, the survey showed not everyone knows how to do it. Energy Week is an effort to change that. Ohio University Unplugged will feature an Energy Street Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featured events include: 11 a.m. - The alternative fuel vehicle show opens on East Union Street in front of Baker Center. Come check out Ford's fuel cell prototype, hybrids from Toyota and Honda, electric cars, GEM cars, the ethanol car, the bio-diesel car and the solar race car.
- There will be vendor displays, food, and games located at the Howard Hall site next to Baker Center.
- COSI on Wheels, E=MC2, will have many hands-on energy-related displays set up in the Baker Center Ballroom for students in grades 5 through 8.
12 noon - Gary North, Vice President for Administration, will officially kick off the Energy Street Fair with opening remarks, East Union Street in front of Baker Center.
7 p.m. - Nationally renowned activist Julia Butterfly Hill will close Energy Week with her presentation, "One Makes the Difference". A book signing session will follow Julia's presentation. Copies of her book, "One Makes the Difference" will be available at Follett's Bookstore before the presentation or on site after the presentation. Julia received national attention with her 738-day stay in the canopy of an ancient redwood tree to protest logging.
The City of Athens is closing East Union Street from the corner of Court and East Union and the corner of College and East Union to accommodate the Street Fair activities. The road will close at 8:45 a.m. and will reopen at 4:30 p.m. Throughout the year, people will have the opportunity to see conservation in action in three Energy Star Showcase Dorm Rooms outfitted with energy-efficient products. Students live in the rooms, which will be monitored for the amount of energy saved and be open to tours. Arrange a tour with Andy Sinozich at (740) 593-0026. [ 30 ] | | |
