ATHENS, Ohio -- The Kennedy Museum of Art and the Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center have the perfect solution to beat the summer heat! Join us on Friday, July 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. for our Second Annual Midsummer Evening with the Arts. Cool off with our special treats and enjoy some sizzling art. Join in the fun with family portraits, fabric and festivities. Admission is free and open to all.
Visit the Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center where you can see Quilt National '03, one of the world's premier art quilt exhibitions. Enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres and cool frozen drinks while surrounded by 86 quilts from 27 states and 10 foreign countries. The show is the 13th in the series of biennial exhibitions and visitors can expect visual surprises and pleasures with a variety of quilts from talented and famous fiber artists. You can also visit the Dairy Barn Gallery Shop featuring regional crafts and artwork as well as small works by the Quilt National artists. Don't forget to register for door prizes while you are there or buy a raffle ticket for a Bernina sewing machine, original artwork or a Quilt National catalog autographed by the artists.
Take the quick trip down the road to the Kennedy Museum of Art and bring the whole family, your appetite and a camera for a unique family experience! Enjoy an old fashioned "build your own" ice cream sundae social, sip some down-home lemonade then take your own family portraits in an international or historic backdrop in the acclaimed exhibition: From the Background to the Foreground. This important (and fun) exhibition features 20 different backdrops from Asia, Africa and the Americas. From hand-painted quilted pieces to extravagant studio objects, the exhibition also includes hundreds of 19th- and 20th-century photographs, contemporary and folk art and interactive installations. You can pose in a "moon prop" backdrop and take a circa 1910-style photographic trip to the moon. Or you can be featured in front of vividly colored Central American scenes with airplanes, fast cars and angels; pastoral scenes from China; and mosques and highly adorned interiors from India, just to name a few.
