Ohio University Greek Alumni Hall of Fame inducts three new members

ATHENS, Ohio -- Three individuals who were fraternity and sorority members during their college days before doing on to distinguished careers were recently inducted into Ohio University's Greek Alumni Hall of Fame.

The 2003 awardees are Phi Kappa Tau's C. Brent DeVore, president of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio; Alpha Phi Alpha's Howard Nolan, chief operating officer and managing partner of the Orlando, Fla., office of Moody/Nolan Limited Inc., an architectural firm based in Columbus; and Pi Beta Phi's Joan Herrold Wood of Sarasota, Fla., a former public relations and journalism executive in New York and Florida.

"Ohio University alumni who are members of the Greek community have proven to be among the university's most accomplished and loyal graduates," said Rick Harrison, assistant dean for development for the Division of Student Affairs. "Their achievements serve as an inspiration to current undergraduates and alumni and give us great pride."

DeVore of Westville, Ohio, who earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio University in 1962, has been president of Otterbein College since 1984. He was previously president of Davis & Elkins College, vice president of Hiram College and executive director of the Kent State University Foundation. DeVore has served on the Campus Compact National Executive Committee since 1996 and is a trustee of Grant Riverside Methodist Hospitals and the James and Katherine Rutherford Foundation.

DeVore has held additional leadership roles with the NCAA, Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, Ohio Athletic Conference, Westerville Chamber of Commerce and American Council on Education. This past fall, he received the Ohio University Alumni Association Medal of Merit for Achievement in Higher Education.

Nolan of Oviedo, Fla., who earned a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering from Ohio University in 1957, launched his own planning and engineering business, Engineers & Planners, in 1983 and the following year merged with Curtis Moody's architectural firm to form Moody/Nolan Limited Inc. In 1996, the firm ranked sixth in total sales for minority-owned businesses in the greater Columbus area with annual sales of $10.2 million. The company has designed projects such as the Ohio State University Medical Center's MRI Facility and Schottenstein Center and is one of the architects for Ohio University's planned University Center.

Nolan is a member of the Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees and sits on the Board of Visitors for the College of Engineering. Howard was awarded the Alumni Association's Medal of Merit in 1998.

Wood of Sarasota, Fla., who earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio University in 1952, was vice president of broadcast services and a member of the management committee at Richard Weiner Inc., a major public relations firm in New York. Previously, she worked for J. Walter Thompson, one of the most prestigious full-service advertising firms in the country, and as a staff writer for the Pittsburgh Press. Additionally, she served as president of the Women's Press Club of Pittsburgh.

Wood received the Ohio University Alumni Association's Medal of Merit in 1969, the L.J. Hortin Award from the Scripps School of Journalism in 1992 and the university's Alumna of the Year Award in 1993. She has also served on the university's Foundation Board of Trustees.

Each year, Greek chapters or alumni nominate individuals for the Hall of Fame, and three recipients are chosen to represent each of the three Greek governing councils: the Interfraternity Council, Women's Panhellenic Association and National Pan-Hellenic Council. The Greek Alumni Hall of Fame was developed in 1999.
