ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University School of Music and Community and Professional Programs are once again sponsoring the popular Ohio Trumpet Workshop, June 22-27.
The workshop is designed to provide an intensive experience for serious trumpet players of high school age and older. Participants will benefit from the expertise of nationally recognized, professionally active trumpet artists.
Workshop activities will include master classes, individual coaching, lecture demonstrations, warm-up sessions, group lessons, listening and question/answer sessions, as well as group discussions and other activities. Participants will attend a private opening recital by the featured artists and will also have their trumpet playing constructively critiqued. The workshop's goal is to give students the means to sustain musical growth well beyond their week on campus.
A variety of topics will also be explored including: the fundamental approaches to all aspects of playing; warm-up and practice sessions; improvement in range and endurance; management of the demands of marching, concert and jazz bands; jazz style and improvisation; embouchure development; and musical career possibilities. In addition, participants will be given the chance to try new trumpets and accessories from major instrument manufacturers. Participants will also benefit from exposure to solo and orchestral repertoire, development of listening skills and the chance to perform with and learn from trumpeters throughout the region.
"This is my third year at the workshop and every year I come away a better player," said 2002 workshop participant Ryan Jarrell. "The clinicians are always wonderful musicians and teachers. It's amazing how much your playing can improve in just one week."
This year's clinicians include John Schlabach, associate professor of trumpet at Ohio University since 1998, and Langston Fitzgerald III, artist/teacher of trumpet at Penn State University.
Schlabach previously taught trumpet at Murray State University. In 1995, he was chosen "University Teacher of the Year" by the Kentucky Music Educators Association and was the recipient of the 2001 Ohio University School of Music "Distinguished Teacher" Award. Schlabach has presented numerous solo recitals at major universities throughout the midwest and southeast and has extensive performing experience as a principal and solo orchestral player. He is currently principal trumpet in the Ohio Valley Symphony Orchestra and OhioBrass.
Fitzgerald has played trumpet with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 1970. He served as assistant professor of trumpet, coordinator of the brass department and orchestra conductor at Howard University and has also taught trumpet at Morgan State University, The Duke Ellington High School for the Performing Arts, University of Maryland at Baltimore County, University of the District of Columbia, Towson State University and Western Maryland College.
The cost for participation in the 2003 Ohio Trumpet Workshop is $375 for residents and $275 for commuters. To register or for more information, call (740) 593-1521 or visit the Community and Professional Programs Web site at www.ohiou.edu/noncredit/trumpet.htm .
