Ohio University College of Communication announces establishment of two new awards

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University College of Communication recently announced the establishment of two new awards to honor professionals who have made contributions to the field of communications.

Tom Kuby, who received his bachelor's of science in journalism from Ohio University in 1955, and his wife, Barbara, have made a Bicentennial Campaign commitment that will create the Crystal Globe Award. The award, which will bestow a cash prize, will honor students and alumni of the College of Communication who use public relations skills to make the world a better place.

Kuby, who earned master's and doctoral degrees from California Coast University, also established and supports the L. J. Hortin Faculty Mentor Award. This award, given annually by the College of Communication, recognizes a current or retired faculty member for his or her work mentoring students and graduates both inside and outside of the classroom.

A campaign commitment from Ursula Farfel, a 1956 graduate of Ohio University and her husband, Gilbert, will establish the Ursula and Gilbert Farfel Prize for Investigative Journalism. The annual $25,000 prize will honor the service that journalists provide to our society, especially in the area of investigative reporting.

The award will be one of the largest presented in the journalism profession. Working journalists will be able to submit entries annually and the recipient will be announced at future Communication Week awards ceremonies.

"It's an honor for the Farfels and Kubys to establish these prestigious prizes in journalism at Ohio University," said College of Communication Dean Kathy Krendl. "Their generosity will enable our college to select the recipients of some unique prizes in journalism. They will bring a great deal of prestige to this institution as well as to the fields of public relations and investigative journalism."

The Bicentennial Campaign - which has raised more than $163 million toward its goal of raising $200 million in time for the university's bicentennial in 2004 - will provide money for scholarships, endowed professorships, technological enhancements, innovative programs, and select capital improvements.
